These insects are fierce predators that stalk, capture and feed on aquatic crustaceans, fish and amphibians. Also known as toe-biters, electric-light bugs and Alligator Ticks (in Florida), they are considered to have one of the most painful bites in the insect world. (is is not included on the Schmidt Pain Index because this is a bite, not a sting) They are the largest insects in the insect order Hemiptera and are typically encountered in freshwater streams and ponds. When they strike, they will inject a powerful digestive saliva that liquefies the inside of their prey so they can suck out the liquefied remains. Belostomatids also show paternal care and the eggs of many species are laid on the male’s wings and carried until they hatch. In some areas, Water Bugs are considered a delicacy and are a popular food in Thailand. check out the framed water bug.
